Bambi

Bambi (Millar)

1964 - 1975
My sister and I had been begging and pleading for a puppy for so long, we yearned to look after one of those lovely, hairy, floppy, lovable puppies that you can snuggle. Then I remember the day my Mum picked us up from primary school, her friend was in the car holding a strange rat looking tiny puppy and my first instinct was what a horrible looking thing but being a polite little 8 year old girl when asked did I like her friends dog I had to say yes .... but then it turned out the puppy was for us, she was all ours to love and care for and she was a Chihuahua!! We had just seen the Disney film Bambi in the cinema so I promptly named her Bambi.

My overriding memory of Bambi is taking her for walks on the beach in the winter when there were no day trippers from London, no tourists, just Bambi and myself.

And of course liver!! Everyone in my family hated liver but my Mum always bought it for Bambi and the smell in the kitchen was vile every time she was cooking it ..... but we loved Bambi and nothing was too much to put up with.

Sadly, after 11 wonderful years, she got out and was run over on the main road. After such a negative reaction when I first saw her, we were all devastated when we lost her because we had grown up with her and she was such a part of our family.

It's a long time ago now but Bambi is always remembered.
