National Pet Bird Day 2025

National Pet Bird Day 2025

Wednesday 17th, September 2025
Each year on the 17th of September, bird enthusiasts mark National Pet Bird Day. The occasion was created in 2019 by the Bird Enjoyment and Advantage Koalition (BEAK) to shine a spotlight on the joy birds bring into our homes and the care they need to thrive.

Why Birds Capture Our Hearts

Pet birds are unlike any other companion animal. Some can live for 50 years or more, which means they can share a household for generations. Their colourful feathers and distinctive songs brighten up even the smallest spaces. A few species are talented mimics, repeating phrases or sounds they hear around the home. Unlike larger pets, many birds fit comfortably into modest living areas, but that doesn’t mean they are low-maintenance. They rely on thoughtful care, stimulation, and attention to stay healthy and happy.

What the Day Represents

BEAK created the day to encourage responsible ownership, highlight the commitment birds require, and promote safe, ethical practices when acquiring them. By taking part, owners and enthusiasts can help ensure that birds are kept in environments that respect their physical and social needs.

Fascinating Facts

Birds are extraordinary creatures. The peregrine falcon is the undisputed speed champion, capable of diving at about 389 km/h when it swoops on prey. The white-throated needletail - sometimes called the needle-tailed swift - is thought to fly at around 170 km/h in level flight, though that record has yet to be confirmed. On land, the ostrich reigns supreme, easily running over 70 km/h and reaching short bursts close to 97 km/h. These examples show just how varied and specialised birds can be.

Caring for a Pet Bird

Looking after a bird is long-term. Their long lifespans mean that welcoming one into your home is not a short-term decision. A healthy bird needs a varied diet that suits its species, regular check-ups with an avian vet, and mental stimulation through toys, perches, and interaction. Clean, well-spaced housing with proper lighting and periods of rest is essential. Responsible ownership also involves choosing birds from reputable breeders or rescues, rather than supporting practices that harm wild populations.

Getting Involved

Celebrating National Pet Bird Day can be simple. You might refresh your bird’s living space with new perches or toys, or spend extra time socialising with them. Sharing stories or tips with fellow bird owners, either online or in local groups, helps build a sense of community and spreads knowledge. Supporting bird rescues or welfare charities is another meaningful way to join in. If you’re thinking about getting a bird, use this day as a prompt to research thoroughly before making the leap.

National Pet Bird Day is a chance to enjoy the beauty and personality of our feathered friends while remembering the responsibilities they bring. By learning, improving their care, and sharing what we know, we make sure these extraordinary animals continue to thrive alongside us.
